Setting up a Plan View to include overhead items such as ceiling grids as reference information

Frequently during Autodesk Revit MEP training sessions I`m asked the question:

“Can we set the ceiling grid so it can be seen in the plan view?”

The answer is “Yes” and perhaps the simplest way to achieve this once you have checked the Visibility Graphics settings for the view, within the Model Category list for the element/s you are wishing to see, in this example Ceilings.

Is to set in the Properties of the Floor Plan the Underlay option Range Base Level to the same Level you are in and to set Underlay Orientation to Look up.

This method can be very useful when wishing to display overhead items as reference information.

In addition to the above if you are “Linking” in the Architectural and Structural Revit models you will need to check the View Range properties for the view.

In this example the Primary Range Top: is set to the Level above and the Cut Plane Offset: at 2700, as the Ceiling is located with an elevation height of 2600 the Cut Plane is set slightly above to display the desired information in the Plan View.
